When describing an item for resell online, you want to be as detailed as possible. This will prevent buyers from having to ask questions and slowing or even hindering a sale. Wondering what to include in your eBay listing? Start here
Build a template first
Before you even begin your description, you will want to build a template that can be pulled up for ease of listing. This just makes life so much easier when you go to list items. In your template, you can include common things like your shipping method and a closing statement which we will discuss below.

1. Detailed measurements
Aside from listing the item size this is generally what I measure
Measurements for Pants
Rise | The distance from the middle of the crotch seam (right between your legs) to the top of the waistband. It usually ranges from 6 inches to 12 inches. |
Inseam | The length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg |
Outseam | The outer length of the pants – measured from the top of the waistband, down the side to the bottom of the hem. |
Hip | The fullest part of the pants x 2 |
Waist | The waistband x 2 |
Leg Opening | The opening at the bottom of the pants |

Measurements for shirts, dresses & jackets
Total Length | Length from neck line to hem line |
Bust | Armpit to Armpit |
Hip | Where the hips sit in the dress |
Waist | The smallest point of the dresss |
Shoulder to Shoulder | Shoulder to shoulder |
Arm Length | The length of the sleeve |

2. Detail the type of home does it come from
Let buyers know if your items come from a smoke-free or pet-free home, many times this will make or break a sale. If you dont list it, many buyers will inquire.
3. New, Used or Vintage
I always reiterate if the item is new with or without tags (NWT/NWOT) or in excellent used condition (EUC).
I will also commonly restate the size reiterate the fabric type and if it is dry clean only event if these things are already listed in the drop-down menu as some people will skim over that part of the listing.

4. Be brutally honest
Describe the item in extreme detail and this includes any defects. If there is a small hole in one of my items even the size of tiny pinhole, I put in the description and post a photo of it.
People can be pretty nitpicky about their clothes as they should be. If you are forthcoming and everything is laid out in the description they know exactly what they are getting and can’t say they didn’t know prior to purchase.
Also, Make sure you thoroughly check the clothes before you purchase so you won’t get any surprises once you get home
5. Your return & shipping policy
I usually state my return policy and shipping method in my listing description.
You can also add in the payment methods you accept as well.
6. Photos
Obviously, you want to include great quality photos. Make sure your lighting is sufficient and if possible have the same background for all your photos to make sure your store looks cohesive.
Some sellers will include additional photos within the description listing, aside from those required.
7. Closing Statement
I also say something like this little blurb at the end of my listing
“Please read carefully, ask questions and if possible try items on in a store prior to buying to ensure fit! I want you to be 100% satisfied with your item! Need more photos or information? Please don’t hesitate to email me with any other questions or concerns!“
Hope this helped with your listing, what else would you include?
